Signs of Redlining: East Bay
The goal of this project was to shed light on the impact of redlining through an installation in the landscape. Redlining is a well-documented event that created different landscapes in black and brown neighborhoods by devaluing property in those neighborhoods.
The images to the left show that redlined neighborhoods had an overall decrease in housing (middle set) and were the focus of highway building (bottom set).
I chose 4 transects to install signs showing the zone it was in. Two transects went along the boundaries, and two cut across zones. The photos of the installations are at the top and were taken within 12 hours of installing them. Of note was the systematic removal of the signs in more affluent areas.
The course was taught by Walter J. Hood, Professor at UC Berkeley.
